Comfort Zones

I've spent time with some amazing runners in the past month. And each experience has been completely different. Here's a little insight into why.

This:
was totally out of my comfort zone. Meeting new people. In a large group. Feeling old. And slow. And not nearly as cute as everyone else.

This:
was mildly more in my comfort zone. Mostly new people. In another group. New situation. I never run with people. But at least I was running.

And this:
was perfect. One on one. With an amazing person and friend. Talked about running and everything else. And I'm even fine with the fact that this picture means I should change my header image to one of Skipper (you know, Barbie's littler/smaller - but in our case not younger - sister that has a cuteness equal to Barbie's hotness).

I am not really one of those people that tries to find new things to do to help me get out of my comfort zone. I'm pretty sure it's called a COMFORT zone for a reason. And I like to be comfortable. But I don't regret the Yogurtland meeting. Or running with that group this past Saturday. Running has forced me to step outside my comfort zone, and I'm sure it will continue to do so.

I just have to remind myself that spending time with other runners is sometimes like running. You don't regret the runs you do, even if they are hard.
And sometimes they will be hard.
But you do regret the runs you don't do.

  2. SUCH the MOST PERFECT post EVER. seriously LOVE it. I can totally relate. Running is constantly pushing me toward new possibilities that I did not even know I was capable of...I have met new people and new goals...all things that I used to be so afraid of...seriously I am SO grateful. Sad I missed out this past Saturday but I definitely will TRY NOT to let it happen again :)

  3. Running has done the same for me. I have only started this year and I am always nervous to run with a group because I am still slow. But it is cool how friendly the running can be!

  4. I'm a comfort zone kind of person too, but running (and blogging) has made me see how awesome it is to meet new people, especially since most of my friends are non-runners.

Maybe the first picture will become your new comfort zone.

  5. I love that running, biking, triathlons and blogging has taken me completely out of my comfort zones. I know without these things I would still be dong the same ole thing.

I can't believe you met EMZ. I am really jealous!

  7. We will meet at the South Valley 1/2, and I will be awkward and laugh too much because it's what I do. Also, I will probably talk about something totally inappropriate... because that's just how I am. Awkward and inappropriate. And I blush a LOT.

  8. It's nice to know that other people get insecure too. I catch myself thinking that I'm not as thin or as young or as fast as my cute running friends. But then I remember that running is the great equalizer and though we're all at different levels and abilities, we all love to run. Good for you for stepping out of your comfort zone. I'm glad I got to meet you and hope we can do it again sometime! I'm still reeling over your girls' beautiful milky skin!

  9. Love your thoughts!

It's a struggle to get out of the comfort zone. My running buddy (for the last 3 years) is moving far away! Now I have to push myself to get out on my own, or find a new buddy/group to run with.

  10. I'm not a big group person either... I do almost all my running alone. Too much pressure with big groups. :)

Emz is the best eva...so fun you two could meet up!!

  12. How cool you've had so many meet ups, comfy or otherwise. Good for you for getting out of your zone, I have lone wolf instincts as well. Love the analogy you made at the end!

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
