You Can't Always Get What You Want

I know I've said it before, but I'm saying it again. I. LOVE. SPEEDWORK. I never feel stronger (or faster) than when I am doing speedwork.

Tonight's run was a fartlek workout on the treadmill. Somehow The Princess has trained her body to poop at bedtime. Could a kid come up with a better excuse to get out of bed EVERY night? I mean how can you tell your child to go back to bed when she really needs to go and manages to get something out every single time. And tonight, every single time happened THREE times. So with that delay and a second round of rocking my baby (I know she's two but she's still my baby) to sleep, I didn't get on the treadmill until 8pm. I did a short warm-up and then did four x 5-minute intervals @ 10K pace (8:49) with 2-minute recovery jogs. My plan called for four or five intervals; I went with four because I was hungry and was pretty sure my husband wanted to eat dinner sooner than later since he waited to eat with me instead of eating with the girls. So my fartlek run gave me 3.35 miles for the night.

Now I'm heading upstairs to do some HARD CORE (with a full belly, so this should be extra fun) before I head to bed.

RUN: Tonight I was loving You Can't Always Get What You Want by The Rolling Stones. It makes me smile because it reminds me of The Princess. I sing it to her sometimes. Not sure what that says about my parenting, but she's started singing it back to me. At appropriate times. And she's four. So we're even.

  1. Hard Core Club with a full belly? You ARE a warrior!

  2. Juggling parenting and "hard core" training is not for the faint of heart!

  3. I don't know how you manage to get your runs in with kids. You're obviously a much more dedicated person than I. If I was interrupted three times, I would have just called it quits for the night.

Hmmm, probably a good thing i don't have kids yet.

  5. Candice, I swear somedays we live the same life. Doodle also trained herself to poop at bed time. No fun. And Dilly never wakes up without a load in her diaper. Potty training her is sure to be fun.

  6. Kids are so smart. Bedtime pooping. Genuis!

  7. Speedwork after rock-a-bye baby is pretty hard core itself. And on that note, you're absolutely right. Rock them as long as you can.

So for about 2+ years, I've sung that same You Can't Always Get... song to the kids when necessary.
Funny thing, their interpretation was missing one key word, so their singing response has always been, "You Always Get What You Want."
    Gotta love 'em.

  8. hilarious. my kid pooped during pilates today at the gym and i'm all "excuse me, i have to change my kid's poop." so dumb. i'm also falling in love with speed work. i'm going to a tread class tomorrow, and i'm stoked. i have a much harder time doing intervals by myself.

  9. I'm impressed that you still get such good workouts in between kids, husband and life in general. You have great discipline.

  10. Okay 2 is totally still your baby! Mine is!

I am impressed that you can get on the mill at such a late hour. I have trouble doing that until winter sets in. After that it's a little easier since it's dark in the morning and dark after work. I never see the sun anyway! :-)

Great job taking care of the kiddos and getting your workouts in!

Did you tell me you got your package? j/w

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
