Running, ruins of an ancient civilization, and other randomness.

I don't always run. But when I do, it makes me happy.

You would think that knowledge would be enough to get me out the door more often, but I'm in a funk. And as a result, I pretty much don't feel like doing anything. Even the things I know will make me feel better. Like running.

The other day I was thinking about how I feel like a fraud lately. Like I can't call myself a runner anymore.

If I only run three days most weeks, am I a real runner? If I don't get excited before my runs, am I a real runner? If most runs feel hard, am I a real runner?

I've seen all the quotes about how it doesn't matter how far or fast or often you run that makes you a runner. But seeing isn't always believing. Somehow I always believe things like that when applying them to everyone except myself.

So I decided to think about what I want to accomplish as a "runner" this year. I have some races on the calendar. Which is a big deal considering my last race was the Boston Marathon last April. And I have some big goals, which will helpfully motivate me out of my funk and help me get focused in multiple ways.

Luckily I have a supportive family. Yesterday, I was feeling overwhelmed and didn't feel like running or spending the time it would take, but Scott pushed me out the door because he knew I'd be glad I went. And of course I was. Tomorrow I'll log my third run of the week. And next week I'll make a plan to keep working toward my goals. Then I'll take it one day at a time. Because that's pretty much the only way I can handle it these days.

Now on to much lighter and happier things. Some random...

...and some funny, because it is Friday after all.

  1. That questionnaire! I die! LOL. I know many people in a running funk right now (including me). I always only run 3-4 times per week (swim on the other days) but lately running is a struggle. It's very cold and icy in spots and I am just not super excited about it. Was supposed to run today but ended up back swimming even though I swam yesterday. I do consider myself a runner, just trying to get thru this "season" of how I am feeling and what the weather is doing. We cam do it!! Hang in there.

    1. I was supposed to run today but rode my bike trainer instead. I've decided to stop worrying about mileage and just focus on my overall fitness. That has helped a little. It makes it easier that I am not training for anything right now! Good luck the next little while. And be careful on that ice! Let's keep our fingers crossed the groundhog was right and we really do have an early spring!

  2. I definitely don't call myself a runner right now, but hey, I did when I ran 3x a week so you still qualify ;) I hope this year will be better than last for you (running wise. Well, why not everything-wise, I guess?!) I think it is just the January funk. I want to leave for hawaii and not come back until it is spring here.....so like late april.

    That blockbuster meme is hilarious!

    1. I am glad you have a reason (felicity) to come back (besides me) before April. Otherwise I would really worry. 10 days is going to be long enough without a Megan fix for me!!

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
