Epic #momfail

First things first. Happy National Running Day!! I hope you all get in a great run today. I will be cross training my heart out but might try to sneak in a short little run with my girls later in the day just to celebrate.

Ever since I got my Chucks, my girls have wanted same. When we found these copycats for $10, I was all for it! And now I want my own pink pair, of course.

Those darling pink shoes may look innocent, but they led to my lowest point of the day yesterday. In fact, it was one of my biggest motherhood fail moments in a while. My Gracie girl took this picture to send to her dad to show him her cute outfit and new shoes.

The motherhood fail came when she went to text it to him and saw this:

I was upstairs putting clean sheets on her bed when she came in and said, "I'm sorry I'm going to make this summer so challenging."

If she'd said it defensively or angrily, I probably wouldn't have felt like I'd just been punched in the gut. But I could hear the hurt in her voice as she said it sincerely. My heart broke.

Of course I responded so maturely. I flipped out all defensively and got mad and told her not to read other people's texts, which was practically impossible since they were RIGHT THERE when she went to text her dad. Not only did I feel like crap for her seeing the text, but I was mad at myself because I'd actually had the thought that I should erase it after I sent it to Scott. Then I was mad at myself for how I reacted and the things I said. It was the perfect storm of motherhood failure.

I eventually became an adult again and when I was laying by her at bedtime I talked to her about what I was referring to when I sent that text to Scott and how we could make the summer less challenging together. And because in my meltdown, I may have said I don't want to be a mom, I explained to her that there's nothing I want more than to be a mom but that I feel like I fail so much, and when I feel like I'm failing, it is so hard and discouraging and makes me say things I don't mean.

I'm sure I've scarred her for life. And since she has a ridiculously good memory of even the smallest most random things, I'm sure she'll never forget seeing that text. I'm sure I'll carry the guilt of yesterday for many days to come. It will make me sad in unexpected moments. But all I can do is try to make today better, try to be a better mom today than I was yesterday, and learn from my mistakes.

So the next time you have your own #momfail moment, remember you're not alone. Remember you're human. And apologize, because they deserve it. Then move on and keep trying to be the best mom you can every single day because those little people who love you deserve the best.

  1. Thank you for sharing this. I've had more of those failing moments than I care to remember. I try to remind myself that it is okay for them to see that we are human and we make mistakes. It is how we handle those mistakes and apologize that becomes the value in our failures. I'm hoping that by asking for their forgiveness, I'm teaching them how important grace is in human relationships. It certainly does sting though, when those moments pop up in our heads and we feel like we have damaged these little beings forever. I've been reading your blog for a while and it is more than evident how much you love those kids. They know it too. Keep your head up! All of us moms have been there!

  2. I know we already discussed this, but these moments are lame...totally normal, but lame. You are the best mom. Your girls love being around you and can feel the love you have for them. Next time jusy vent to me via snap so we can relate and then it all just dissappears ;)

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
