Long run exceptions and comfort food...in a chip

I ran my longest run since the Boston Marathon (April 21, aka the last time I ran before I finally stopped running on my stress fracture) on Saturday. I ran 16 miles of the Big Cottonwood marathon course with Janae. If you know me, you know I'm a very solitary runner. But there are some exceptions. And Janae is most definitely one of them.

My little support crew kept us hydrated with several water stops along the way, which were also great photo ops. And they had chocolate milk for us when we finished.

This course is one of my favorite places to run. Saturday it did not disappoint. I was really glad we ran the new section of the course. The course has changed quite a bit from last year and will almost feel like a different race because of the changes. Saturday really helped prepare me mentally for an out and back stretch that is new this year.

Today is the first day of school for my girls! I miss them already. I'm not sure how summer is already over. It went by crazy fast!! They were both pretty nervous. Princess Grace couldn't fall asleep until almost 9:30 last night because she kept thinking of things that were making her more and more nervous. But she has an amazing teacher this year, so I'm confident it will be a great year for her, which she needs after a challenging 2nd grade year! Ellie Bean was full of silly energy all morning until the ride to school, during which she didn't say one word. She has her cousin and several friends in her class and a fun teacher, so once she gets over the first day of school jitters and adjusts to being there all day, I'm sure she'll do great!

And because it seems like no post is complete without some inclusion of food, here's today's food addition. I taste tested the new Lay's flavors over the weekend. I don't like mangoes but heard the Mango Salsa was really good, so I tried it with an open mind. It tastes way too much like mango and not enough like salsa for me. I couldn't even eat a second chip. The cappuccino has a very strong initial taste with a cinnamony sweet aftertaste. They were okay but not something I'd buy again. The Wasabi Ginger were good; kind of a strange flavor on a chip. And they have a pretty good kick. They were the best of the three. But my hands down favorite is:

I ate a single serving size (not the party size like in the picture, although I don't think it would be a problem tackling a bag that size) in minutes. Scott only got maybe two chips before they were gone.

These are next on my taste test to-do list!! I loved the Marshmallow Krispy Oreos they had last year but can't find them anywhere anymore. Maybe these will be a new favorite. I'll let you know once I hunt some down!

What is your favorite flavor of Oreo?
Are you a solitary runner or do you like to run with friends?

    1. If you like bacon, the Bacon Mac 'n' Cheese chips are worth trying!

And thanks! I can't believe they are back in school already :-(

  2. I am so jealous of all your awesome food! We only really have regular, double stuff, white and chocolate covered oreos here, I don't think I've ever seen any other flavours. But I don't mind because NOTHING will ever beat ordinary old oreos for me, they are amazing. I try not to buy the big packs or they'll be gone in one night! I'd love to run with friends but none of my friends really run so I can't right now - I'm gonna try and find a running club or something though and try it out.

  6. I'm a solitary runner but would love to get some long runs with friends some time (I can never find anyone who wants to run with me).
Our favorite Lay's flavor is the Garlic Cheese Bread. Fave Oreo flavor is Reese's Peanut Butter--seriously, so good!

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
