Harder than running?!?

Some days running is harder than others. If you read this blog, there is a good chance you know that from personal experience. This week I discovered two things that might possibly even be harder than running on those days when you just aren't feeling it and your legs aren't having it.

The first is jumping rope. Because my running has been limited lately, I am trying new things. One of these is a circuit that included several 1-minute intervals of jumping rope. One little minute. But it is HARD. The first 15 seconds or so, I think it is going to be cake. Then it gets harder and harder until I am begging the second hand on the clock to move faster. I'm not sure I have ever broken a sweat in less than a minute before. But by the end of every jump rope minute, I am dripping.

The other thing that, for me at least, is seriously hard is eating only 1200 calories per day. Since I'm trying to lose a few pounds and I can't rely on running to help me out much, I decided to cut my calories. A few different web sites told me my ideal intake for losing 1-2 pounds per week is 1200 calories/day. If I thought I was hungry all the time while training for a marathon, this is a whole new beast. I am not only hungry, I am STARVING. And we (meaning me and my poor family) have learned that a hungry Candice is a grumpy Candice. So I might have to bump it up to at least 1500 calories per day to stay sane and keep my family from kicking me out of the house.

The moral of this blog post? If you are looking for something to do that is difficult and potentially entertaining to you and those around you this weekend, try jumping rope or eating only 1200 calories for a day. Happy Friday!

  1. jumping rope sounds like klutzy, uncoordinated hell to me. But I like the idea of seriously sweating in a minute so maybe I'll give it a shot.

I'm not a big fan of limiting my calories but have lived that hell as well when I've had to.

  4. I to think jumping rope is hard. I know what you mean when you say 1200 that doesnt seem like enough to keep me alive. That is so one of the reasons I run. So I can eat what I want. Hany in there. Glad you are trying different things.

  5. I think I read somewhere that jumping rope is the single fastest calorie burn out there. It's awful! I always feel like my heart is going to pound out of my chest when I'm doing it. Therefore, I haven't jumped rope since the days of gym class.

  6. I love jumping rope...just not in public...for reasons relating to carrying two babies in this body. TMI, I know.
HOWEVER...I do love it! A couple of years ago I did a jump rope challenge with a friend and over the course of a month or so I worked my way up to 45 solid minutes of jumping. It was ridiculous!

  7. I think I usually have at least 1200 calories before I even sit down to eat dinner. I think I would die on that many calories of course I am also running a lot right now. :)

  8. OMG--- jump roping. try double unders. KILLER! it is definitely a killer cardio workout. I did hill repeats with jump rope intervals. HARDEST 20 minute work out...

and the diet... oh man. More power to you! Maybe you should up your calories to 1500! a girl's gotta eat! & stay happy!

what else can you do for workouts? Can you do spin classes?

  9. I am physically incapable of jumping rope. I always end up jumping on to top of said rope or falling on my face. Maybe I can fake jumping rope by jumping up and down really fast? Also, that sounds like not a lot of calories since you are so active. I would starve to death.
