I Like It

When we didn't find any grasshoppers on Monday's run, we tried again yesterday without any luck. However yesterday's run was not without entertainment. I let the girls "run" the last .5 mile (I say "run" because that portion took as long as the previous 2.6 miles had taken). While the girls were running, we started to cross a street as a car approached. The Princess was helping push the stroller, so we were moving pretty slow. As the car passed, I noticed the look on the driver's face and said, "I think that lady was annoyed at us." The Princess' reply: "She can't be annoyed at me. She isn't my mom. Only moms can be annoyed at children." Okay then.

While there are many more mommy/daughter runs ahead, I think that might have been our last grasshopper run. This morning when we came downstairs, we found a new little friend sleeping soundly in a jar on the counter.

Apparently the hubby found this furry little gal (of course it's a girl) before he left for work. We have made her a comfortable little home and plan on letting her stay as long as she seems content. I am much happier with a caterpillar than a grasshopper living in my house. And of course she inherited the grasshopper's name (Avrie Hallie Emma Sophie Gracie Candice); maybe we'll call her Fuzzy for short. I'll have to run that by The Princess though.

I'm considering a little cross training for today. My legs need a break from the double jogger, and running while The Princess was at school didn't happen because I had too many errands. When I pulled out a Christmas CD this morning, I realized I've been missing my running tunes (I don't listen to anything when I'm with my girls). I also realized it's time to add a little Christmas music to my playlist. Yes, I am one of those annoying people that starts listening to Christmas music and decorates for Christmas as soon as the Halloween decorations come down. Since my hubby isn't a big fan of Thanksgiving and we are all crazy for Christmas at our house, we try to enjoy the season as long as we can.

Anyhow, thinking about my running tunes gave me the idea to share the last ten songs I added to my playlist. You are welcome to do the same if you have a blog so maybe we can all get some ideas for new running songs. And as you can see, my ten recent iTunes purchases reveal a little of the runnerd in me:

Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars
Misery - Maroon 5
Club Can't Handle Me (feat. David Guetta) - Flo Rida
The Only Exception - Paramore
Billionaire (Glee Cast Version)
Empire State of Mind (Glee Cast Version)
The Adventure - Angels & Airwaves
New in Town - Little Boots
I Like It (feat. Pitbull) - Enrique Iglesius
Animal - Neon Trees

I'm too lazy to link to each one on iTunes, but they are easy to find. If you have any trouble, send me an email (ihaverun@hotmail.com) and I will forward you a link.

  2. You almost beat me to the x-mas music, started ripping a dozen CDs to put on my phone yesterday. Triggered by a nearby farm that ALREADY has lights up on their trees, which is all it takes to generate that feeling of Christmas excitement. I warned my wife she has until Friday before the holiday music starts playing, and the kids get a Christmas carol each night at bedtime.
It is nice of you to let the kids jump out and run even if it did impede the lady who wasn't annoyed. And good luck with Fuzzy, if she hibernates, you'll have a pretty long-term addition.
As for your tunes, I guess there's still plenty of room for me to grow in the runnerd universe. I only recognize 2 singers/bands!

  5. Thanks for the tune suggestions!

I saw your runnerds question on FB last night right before I went to sleep (yes, I check FB on my phone before I go to bed - my son in Afghanistan uses it to keep in touch with us!), but I was too tired to respond.

So, I guess my answer is, you know you're a runnerd when you're in bed by ten so you can can up at four for an early workout! :)

  6. I like Fuzzy! We nearly always have some life form from outside living with us. I admire you for pushing the stroller on your runs...lots of respect.

  7. We have many attempts to bring ctitters into the house, but have always stood firm. 2 dogs and a cat are plenty!

  8. Thanks so much for posting those songs! I actually downloaded 4 of them after reading your post. I think I'll put a list of my recent downloads on my blog later today! New running songs are always good!

  9. On my normal bike route there are some MASSIVE grasshoppers. We are talking 4-5 inches. You have to watch out so you do not run over them or grossness occurs. Yuck!

  10. Thankfully, my boys don't keep critter pets. I don't think I could handle it. Love your list of songs. I think we are listening to a lot of the same music on our runs. :)

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
