Three Things Thursday - American Fourth Edition

1. Because I am training for my next marathon and didn't want to get off track any more than necessary because of my shin, I went to my sports medicine ortho on Wednesday. I was pretty sure the pain wasn't a stress fracture, but it was nice to have him say he was pretty sure as well. He didn't want to do a bone scan unless the pain gets worse, and it has in fact gotten better. He did say to give it some rest and then cross train until the pain is completely gone. It feels good enough that I am giving the bike a go tomorrow. I am also in the process of reworking my marathon training schedule. As of Saturday, I will be down to 13 weeks until race day. I told my hubby that I will "run" it, even if it takes me all day. I've put too much into it already to call it quits.

2. It has been hard to not run, but it has also given me time to finish the ginormous book I was reading, Stephen King's Under the Dome. I finished this afternoon, and it was worth all 1072 pages. It is one of those books that makes you hesitant to start a new book because you aren't ready to leave the characters behind. And after a book that long, you have spent so much time with the characters that you really feel like you know them. Bottom line, that Stephen King is one brilliant storyteller.

3. I am bummed I won't be among those celebrating "the American fourth" (as The Princess calls it) with a race this weekend, but I am excited for everyone racing this weekend. Good luck, have fun and enjoy your Independence Day weekend!!

RUN: I'm loving Katy Perry's California Gurls. It's my latest running playlist addition.

  1. I'm a little embarassed to admit how much I like "California Gurls" - it's so catchy! I'm very happy to hear you don't have a stress fracture - *whew* - have a good time on your bike. :-)

  2. I'm glad that you don't have a stress fracture! I bet that was a relief! Good luck with your cross training and I hope you feel 100% soon!

  3. Glad you got confirmation that it's not a stress fracture. When I was having foot problems, I breathed a huge sigh of relief when the "professional" confirmed something other than a fracture.

13 weeks, even minus a couple more if you need to cross-train, will still be enough time for you. It's not like you're running your first marathon, or that you've been sedentary for the last year. Even if you train for 10 weeks, I think you'll still finish strong, and not "take all day." May not be quite as fast as you want, but I think you'll surprise yourself since you are, in fact, already a runner.

  4. Great news about your shin.

Sorry you can't race this weekend, but that half marathon will be here before you know it.

  6. I'm happy to hear you went and got the shin checked out and are taking it easy. Like I said earlier this week, just make it to the finish line happy and healthy... there will always be another marathon to race!
Have a wonderful holiday weekend! xoxo

  10. With only 6 weeks until my marathon, I had a terrible shin splint. I took two weeks off, but was sure that I biked and swam during that time. I never cross train, but always want to. This was a good excuse. When I got back to running, I didn't feel like I missed out. I ran my marathon and PR'ed. My body changed in very positive ways over those two weeks. And now, I'm trying to commit to biking and swimming at least once a week! Don't be discouraged. Rest and enjoy! You'll be ready.

Carpet Burn On My Butt (and a giveaway)

After two lame, pathetic, lackluster weeks of running, I woke up excited to run yesterday. And today, I wore my running clothes all morning in anticipation of my nap time run today. Even in spite of sore glutes and tired quads from getting in some P90X Core Synergistics last night, I couldn't wait to get moving on Millie. I am a planner. Today I had a plan to get my run in while my girls slept, and my day was organized accordingly. I am also a creature of habit. The first thing I do when I roll out of bed every single day is make my bed and my girls' beds. If I do something else first, it throws off the entire morning. I am a creature of habit when it comes to my running routines as well. There are a few things that differ depending on whether I am running on Millie or outside, whether my girls are asleep or not, and whether or not they are joining me in the jogger. Yet, no matter when, where, how far or with whom I run, some things are always the same. My hair goes into a pony

I wasn't sure going in...

Yep, I'm checking in. Why? Because I did something completely out of my comfort zone that I wanted to share with you. Last week I went to a place near Salt Lake called Dexa Body, where I got a DEXA Scan. For those unfamiliar with what that is, I asked Google to help us out:  "Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry  ( DXA , previously  DEXA ) is a means of measuring  bone mineral density  (BMD). Two  X-ray  beams, with different  energy levels , are aimed at the patient's  bones . When  soft tissue   absorption is subtracted out, the  bone mineral density  (BMD) can be determined from the absorption of each beam by bone. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is the most widely used and most thoroughly studied bone density measurement technology." Since that is pretty medical sounding, here's my take. A DEXA Scan is a tool to measure your total body composition. It specifically breaks down the regional composition of your lean and fat tissue. It gives a fat distribution

Social Media: Some good, a lot of bad, and way too much ugly

There are a lot of good things that come from social media. We can connect with people we have lost touch with. We can unite as a group (runners!!) with a comment interest. We can promote a good cause. Sadly though, what social media does best is makes us feel bad about ourselves and makes us feel negatively towards others. This isn't just my opinion, although I can unquestionably support the truth behind this based on my own experience. I have spent way too much time feeling bad about myself as a result of comparing myself to others based on their Instagram or Facebook versions of themselves. And there are several people I have started feeling negatively about or have become completely annoyed with because of their IG and FB posts. It isn't just me though. There are actual studies that can back me up on the negative impact social media can have. I have read dozens of articles reviewing many different studies that show the overwhelmingly negative (vs. positive) effec
