When we stopped for gas on our road trip to Arizona, The Princess got out of the car and moaned, "Why is it so freakin' hot?"
I reminded her that I'd warned her it was going to be hot in Arizona (then we had a little chat about not using the word freakin'). Several times today, she has commented about how stinkin' hot it is. She doesn't have to tell me though. I was the one up at 5:00 am to run when the temps had "cooled off" into the 90s. I survived by drinking LOTS of water and stopping to mop my face with a cool towel a few times. I only braved three miles. I figured between trying to adjust to the ridiculous heat (seriously, how crazy do you have to be to live in this oven??) and easing back into running regularly, three miles was a good choice. I am doing speedwork tomorrow and then eight miles on Saturday. I am still trying to figure out what time I need to get up to make sure I finish before the sun comes up; I think I might do the first few miles on the treadmill so I am not running in a strange neighborhood in the dark.
I thought about running in the pool, but I am not sure how to do it properly to get the benefits I need to really count it as part of my training. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
RUN: If it hadn't been 107 degrees when I pulled into my parents' driveway last night, I would have gone for a run right then. After 13 hours in the car - just me and my two girls - I needed a run!!

Hats off to you for making that drive solo with your kiddos! Enjoy the trip.
ReplyDeleteI have run in Arizona in the summer - so much for "it's a dry heat..."
ReplyDeleteSounds like you are doing great....that heat sounds oppressive!! Take care!
ReplyDeletewhew I wouldn't have wanted to drive that with hubs :)
ReplyDeleteyes heat running really bites the big one... sounds like you have the right ideas
Treadmill start is the way to go.
ReplyDeleteSunrise is at 5:30AM which would you a "comfortable" run outdoors til 6AM, I'd expect.
After copying Daddy yesterday, I really wish my daughter would ONLY say freakin'
13 hours in the car is too long with anyone. Props to you!
ReplyDeleteSounds PAINFUL. I used to run in a pool but I had an aqua joger in the deep end, not sure about running without one.
ReplyDeleteHUGS!
It's sooooo hot!
ReplyDeleteThat is stinkin hot!!!!
ReplyDeletejust looking around on your blog - avoiding cleaning up after my 1 year old's birthday celebration. I ran in the arizona heat for 8 or so years! I think one morning I went out around 4ish- and it was already over 100! I went back home! I'm sure if i had not heard it was that hot on the radio i would have done my 6 miles or so. I now live in Lakeside (white mountains) and I love it. The elevation is giving me racing advantages at lower elevations- and it is nice and cool! I did do a 10 miler this summer and I think we did it at 4 or 5am. I think I can handle 100+temps when the sun is not beating down on me, when the sun is out even 90 or so is hard!
